Carpet cleaning cost is set by the job, not off a sticker, and that is why a search for it turns up wildly different numbers. This guide explains what moves the price, how to compare quotes fairly, and what to ask before you book. It comes from Teddy’s Cleaning & Restoration, a family-run company that has cleaned Oklahoma carpets since 1993, and we do not publish flat rates because they would mislead you.
How carpet cleaning is usually priced
Companies price carpet cleaning in three common ways: by the room, by the square foot, or by the whole job after a walk-through. Each can be fair, but only if you know what the number includes.
A low per-room price can be real, but it often assumes a standard room, and large rooms, hallways, stairs, and closets may be charged separately. A square foot price scales better for big open floor plans. A walk-through quote, which is how we do it, looks at your actual rooms and gives you one total for the job.
The factors that move the number
How much carpet. More square footage means more time, more water, and more equipment time. It is the biggest single factor.
How soiled it is. Carpet that has been cleaned regularly comes clean quickly. Carpet that has not been cleaned in years takes pre-treatment and extra passes, and that adds labor.
Pets and stains. Pet accidents, food spills, and older stains need spot treatment. Pet odor that has soaked into the pad can need more than a standard cleaning.
Fiber type. Synthetic carpet is forgiving. Wool and other natural fibers, and delicate area rugs, need more careful methods.
Access and extras. Stairs, furniture that has to be moved, upholstery, area rugs, and protectant are often add-ons. Oklahoma red dirt in traffic lanes counts too, since it packs into the pile and takes extra work.
Professional cleaning vs a rental machine
A rental machine looks cheaper on paper, but it is not really comparable. Rental units generally have less heat and less suction than professional equipment, so they leave more water and more soap residue in the carpet, and that can make it dry slowly and attract dirt again.
Professional hot water extraction, especially with truck-mounted equipment like ours, rinses harder and pulls the water back out more completely. If you have a small area and light soil, a rental can be fine. For whole-house cleaning, pet odor, or older stains, a pro usually saves you effort and repeat work.
How to compare carpet cleaning quotes
Ask each company the same questions so the quotes line up. What rooms are included, and how do they define a room? Are stairs, hallways, and closets extra? How are stains and pet odor charged? Is there a minimum charge? Is the price fixed, or can it change on the day? How long until the carpet is dry?
If two quotes are far apart, the gap usually comes from scope: one includes what the other treats as an extra. A written quote that lists the scope is the easiest way to compare.

Ways to keep carpet cleaning cost down
Vacuum regularly. Grit does most of the damage and is easy to remove before it settles in. Blot spills fast. Blotting, not rubbing, keeps a spill from becoming a stain. Clean on a schedule. A carpet cleaned regularly needs less work each time, which is the idea behind our recurring cleaning plans.
